I absolutely adore this USB External DVD and CD drive! The drive works seamlessly with my macbook air. During startup of the drive, you simply insert a CD/DVD and wait for your macbook to read the disk. Then, a CD icon should pop up on your desktop. If you're trying to sync CDs with iTunes, that is an even easier process! ITunes should automatically turn on and ask if you'd like to sync the CD. Once you've completed your usage of the disc, you click on the disc icon, go to 'File' in the main menu on the top of the macbook, and scroll down to 'eject disc'.

I considered this purchase a bargain, and I highly recommend the drive! This is obviously a very good item as the many reviews show. My new iMac does not have a dvd drive, so you need an external if you use discs. My fault, but I thought this was a slot drive. I guess I don't know enough to know it would called such if it was a slot dvd drive.

It's made by Archgon, which seems to be a secret in the amazon listings. I discovered they are a somewhat well known company.

It worked off of one usb input but has a Y cable in case it needs more power. Using 2 inputs would upset me, but it didn't need it and worked off of only one of the usb cables.

Just plugged it in to my computer, cd went right to itunes. DVD up and played with DVD player.

A disc must be manually inserted by pushing a button on the unit. This DVD player/writer is primarily designed to be portable and is best suited for notebooks and lap tops; however, there is no problem hooking it up to a desk top machine, and it comes with software for both PC's and Mac's, working with a whole array of Windows operating systems from Windows 8.1 on down. This unit does not come with its own power cord, and a powered USB connection is required; it will not operate if plugged into a USB bank that is not powered. Plug it directly into a USB port on your computer or a powered USB bank, and you'll be good to go.

I've had my mid-2015 MacBook Pro for about 6 months (and an iMac for about 3 years) which didn't have a CD/DVD read/write drive. I thought about getting the Apple version, but it's kind of expensive for just a few hours a use a month, at best. I really got this to start looking through my thousands of photos stored on DVDs and CDs, and so far it works perfectly.

I opened the box, plugged it into a USB 3.0 port (and no, this drive is USB 2.0, but DVD/CD drives just aren't fast enough to ever need USB 3.0) on my MacBook Pro, and I was good to go. You don't need drivers or anything (and some of you who think it's necessary for a Mac, really need to understand how a Mac works with peripherals). It was truly plug and play. Great device, high quality, looks nice, and works with. After looking at other portable drives, I found this one to be the most promising for my Macbook Pro 2017 Model, which runs on a High Sierra operating system. I originally intended to buy the LG one but upon reading a review, it apparently didn't work with a High Sierra system. When I got this I tested it out and it worked perfectly fine.

I used a dvd to test it but it also works with CDs. The drive itself is thin and pretty lightweight. If you also have the same model laptop as me, the drive needs to be connected to the computer via USB so make sure you have a USB connector cord. The instructions are the easiest things to follow. Overall, a good product and well invested purchase.

For those looking for blu ray:The instructions included said that a software unaffiliated with the company had to be downloaded.

Piece of Scat! I probably should have known better than to buy this product about a year ago, after reading the substantial number of really bad reviews. But, as a long time I probably should have known better than to buy this product about a year ago, after reading the substantial number of really bad reviews. But, as a long time fan of Apple products, I convinced myself that mine would not be a lemon. For about 50 uses (mostly importing music CDs into my iTunes library), it worked flawlessly, and I thought those reviews were incorrect.

Now, every time I import a CD the music skips forward in high speed zzzzts. So, I'm in the market for another drive and will not be buying another version of this from Apple. Sad that after all the bad reviews there is no (apparent?) response from the company.

If anyone knows of a reliable drive, from another company, please post here. More (Read full review).

The drive is designed with a slit opening to feed in disk and no mechanical way to eject. This would be ok if the drive function correctly but that is rare. Frequently the drive becomes obsessed with trying to process a disk and prevents the disk from ejecting, forcing you to wait 5, 10, or 15 minutes for it to decide its done with the disk. Biggest waste of money I've ever spent. I love all my other apple product, but this one I'm considering running it over with a tractor. More (Read full review).

I am beyond frustrated at Mac's ongoing attempt to dictate to its users what it feels is best for them. I have to be able to burn discs for work, and with the latest driveless Mac Pros and the USB Superdrive, it's an exercise in futility. Maybe I'll find a six-for-one sale on blank discs. It's ridiculous how much time this takes. If the disc isn't reading correctly the software eject messages don't get through.

Software only solutions are NOT adequate. It's a needless, avoidable problem. Please redesign and include a manual eject. More (Read full review). Written by KATHARINE S from New York. Jan 9, 2019 3 of 3 people found this useful.

But I have not experienced several issues others are having. One of the common things I've seen in some reviews is the inability to get the disc out of the drive.

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro, and the unit has worked flawlessly. I put in a disc and it reads it pretty fast, compared to a third party one I used previously which takes 20 seconds or more to start reading the disc. It opened up itunes very quickly upon reading the music disc. I eject the disc by highlighting it on the desktop and pushing the typical 'Command-E' input.

The disc ejects right away every time, within a second or two. I put in a DVD and it also started up very quickly and had no issues in watching the film. I haven't tried burning a disc yet, but I don't have any Mac software for doing that as my burning disc programs I prefer are PC only. Honestly, I'm wondering if people are just having bad luck with trying to use this on older Macs or just Macs that are running too slow because of issues brought on by the user.

I don't intend to blame the user necessarily since every situation is different, but it's no out of the realm of possibility. Point is, this product seems to function at a high level of quality for me that I was hoping for from Apple. Just take it as one person's good fortune, I guess. More (Read full review).
