Jul 11, 2012 Asus has used the gently sloping “Seashell” design for the majority of its Eee PC netbooks since 2009. Some of the Eee PC models using this design include the 1005, 1008, 1101, 1201 and 1215 series. If you know the basics of upgrading or repairing one Seashell model, you can repair virtually any of the others. Asus designed the Eee PC Seashell series to be as user-friendly as possible; you can perform many common upgrades or repairs in just a few minutes with a bit of practice. Safety Even when your Eee PC netbook is turned off, the components retain a small amount of power.

To avoid an accidental short or discharge, work on your netbook only with the power cable disconnected and the battery removed. Place all of the necessary tools in your work area before beginning your task, and avoid walking on carpeted floors – which can cause static electricity to build – until you are finished.

Upgrading or Replacing Memory The Eee PC Seashell netbook has one memory slot supporting up to 2 GB of DDR2-SDRAM. The netbook comes pre-loaded with a program called the Super Hybrid Engine, which allows you to change the speed of the processor and RAM at will to perform more demanding tasks or conserve battery life. The Super Hybrid Engine’s “Super Performance” mode raises the speed of your netbook by as much as 30 percent, but only if you install the correct RAM. To avoid restricting your netbook’s ability to run at high speeds, upgrade the memory with.

The memory slot for your Eee PC is located on the bottom of the computer and secured with one captive Phillips-head screw. After removing the memory slot cover, gently pull the metal retainers on the sides of the memory module apart until the module rises out of the slot. Remove the module and replace it by inserting the new module in the slot at an angle and pressing down gently until it clicks into place. Replacing the Keyboard When you look above the top row of keys on your Eee PC’s keyboard, you should see several small clips. Push each clip up with a small flat-head screwdriver to release the keyboard.

The clips generally lock into place when pushed. If the clips do not stay in place, grasp one of the keys near the edge of the keyboard and pull up gently while pushing the clips with your other hand.

In some cases, you may find that the keyboard is adhered to the body of the netbook with double-sided tape. You can dislodge the tape by continuing to gently pull the keyboard after releasing the clips, but be careful not to pull the keyboard’s ribbon cable out of its connector. Push the two plastic tabs on the edges of the connector up to release the keyboard cable.

When installing a new keyboard, slide the ribbon cable fully into the connector and push the tabs back down to secure it. Upgrading or Replacing the Hard Drive To access the hard drive of a Seashell Eee PC, you must remove the keyboard and the large plastic and metal panel under it. The panel is essentially the top cover of the netbook’s body. After removing the keyboard, close the screen and turn the Eee PC upside-down. Remove all of the Phillips-head screws from the bottom of the netbook, including the single security screw located under the cover for the memory upgrade slot.

Turn the Eee PC over and open the screen. Through a hole in the top panel, you should see a small blue ribbon cable. This is the cable for the computer’s touch pad; release the cable by lifting the black locking tab on the end of the connector. Remove all Phillips-head screws from the panel. Note that one of the screws is under a yellow warranty sticker. If your netbook is still under warranty, removing this screw will end warranty coverage.

After removing all screws, you can remove the panel by lifting gently, beginning at one corner and working your way to the opposite side. The top panel of a Seashell Eee PC has several plastic securing tabs that may emit “snapping” sounds as the panel is removed.

The Seashell Eee PC uses a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive. After removing the top panel, you should see the hard drive mounted in an upside-down position on the right side of the netbook. The hard drive is partially covered by a ribbon cable. Lift the locking tabs securing both sides of the ribbon cable, and lift the cable out of the two connectors.

You can then remove the single Phillips-head screw holding the hard drive caddy in place. Lift the hard drive up slightly from the left side, and slide the hard drive and caddy out of the connector at a slight angle. Remove the screws holding the hard drive to the caddy and replace the hard drive with a new one. Replacing the hard drive in your Eee PC with a can greatly improve its speed when starting up, shutting down and loading programs. Cleaning and Dust Removal Replacing the hard drive of a Seashell Eee PC gives you full access to much of the inside of the netbook.

If you are performing this project, you may want to take the time to clean the netbook and remove any accumulated dust. Use cotton swabs dampened slightly with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust from the fan, exhaust vent and top half of the system board. Alcohol removes dust easily and evaporates quickly.

You can remove dust under the system board using a can of compressed air with a flexible nozzle. After reassembling the netbook, remove dust from the screen and keyboard using a clean microfiber cloth and a small amount of distilled water.
