31 May 2018 - GMap Turns 10 In May 2018 we marked a full decade since we released, our family of freeware moving map apps. We have been pleasantly surprised by its longevity, especially given that while the backend serving the map content has undergone several major updates, the app itself has remained virtually unchanged for over a decade now. The Google Maps API usage stats tell us this is one of our most popular apps of all time. Being free is no doubt a big reason and we have always had a strong culture of trying to provide freeware options along with our commercial apps, for those who cannot afford it. Another reason for its success as a solid app has been the way we architected it, a modular design with the ability to have its 'heart' (the mapping engine) served remotely. That means we can update it with new features and apply hot fixes without the need for updating the client-side app itself. As you probably already guessed, the 'G' in GMap comes from Google Maps.

Even though in other more advanced mobile and desktop apps we started using other mapping engines like Leaflet, we continued using that moniker as a tip of the hat to the original model. GMap began its life as a Windows app for FSX in three flavours (EFB, Garmin and Browser), but soon added other variants for FS2004, X-Plane and even MSFlight. We also made it possible to import GMap as a module into our Windows desktop EFB products. Later came the Mac editions for X-Plane so the number of different versions currently stands at 8 (not including the GMap Viewers). As the ten year mark rolls past it's an opportune time to stop and think about the future of the app. Web technologies are changing fast and it's unlikely GMap can continue for another decade in its current form, especially if (or rather when) Google makes changes to its Maps API. Just recently we've been getting a few reports from folk on older systems (Win XP) and/or web browsers (IE 9) that Google Maps is sending a message that the map will not load on those platforms.

This is because rendering the CSS3, JavaScript and vector images that power web maps today requires the latest versions of web browsers. Another consideration is keeping the app viable.

Nothing today is technically free, it costs something to someone either monetarily or timewise. From day one we have happily footed the bill for the content delivery system behind GMap and invested time in keeping it running smoothly. These costs have been offset somewhat by those who have purchased standalone products that can also be consumed within GMap. However, this 'freemium' model may not be possible anymore if we are to get another decade out of this app and as more users come onboard. This is especially so now that Google have introduced a pay-as-you-go structure for the use of its Maps API, beginning from 16 July 2018. A very important point is making it easier to update the 8 versions we currently have on offer. Clearly having this many can hamper our ability to push out new builds as we try and balance our time on our other products.

Is it time to consolidate GMap into just one app that supports multiple simulators? What about adding support for? If you are a GMap user, we'd welcome your feedback via our page. 18 March 2018 - Airports App Updated We have made a small update to our Airports app (all editions) which brings some enhancements to the large scrolling map (opened by tapping the map thumbnail). Now the map also loads in more airport details via icons and popups (frequencies and ILS symbols) as well as surrounding navaids which can be toggled as required (Mac edition shown): The udpate applies to all editions:. Because the data in this app is delivered via the cloud, no update to the app itself is required and all current users should now be receiving the enhanced map. 16 Sep 2017 - QuickPlan and EFB Apps Updated To coincide with the new aero chart products, we have released free updates to our QuickPlan and EFB line of apps:.
